Requirements and local rules concerning the safe use of Artificial Optical Radiation (AOR). Training Requirements ALL users of the University of Edinburgh who wish to work with potentially hazardous lasers must attend the Radiation Protection unit online course Laser Safety Awareness. Risk Assessment Before any work is carried out with laser and broadband optical sources (e.g. UV sources, LEDs etc) a suitable and sufficient Risk Assessment (RA) must be completed using Artificial Optical Radiation Risk Assessment Guidance. Local Procedural Controls The RA will identify the work with laser and broadband optical sources that requires the implementation of Local Procedural Controls. Where an area requires procedures to be followed to prevent harm when working with sources of AOR, that area must have a Local Procedural Controls document in place. It is expected that for all work with Class 3B lasers, Class 4 lasers, and Risk Group 3 lamps, local procedural controls will be required as per Local Procedural Control – Guidance on Artificial Optical Radiation. Laser Register Finally, details of the new lasers must be entered into the Departmental Laser Register. Please contact the central area Departmental Laser Supervisor Anisha Kubasik-Thayil to register your laser.
