Guidance on how to dispose of waste while working at 1GS and HRB. Waste policy It is a statutory duty to ensure that laboratory waste is segregated from domestic refuse. The University may be penalised for failing to properly segregate waste, and waste management contractors et al may be put at significant risk if they are put in the position of handling waste materials that have been incorrectly bagged and/or labelled. Lab and office waste is sorted at user level according to the waste and the procedure that generates it. Details of the categories of waste disposal are collected at the waste policy document below, and a simplified version (lab-Waste chart) in the form of graphic key posters are displayed in all laboratories. More detailed information can be found in the Waste policy (HRB and 1GS only). Document waste_hrb_1gs_mar_22.pdf (251.55 KB / PDF) Waste collection of chemicals or equipment Waste disposal is managed by the Technical Team free of charge (unless exceptional circumstances): Any unwanted chemicals (hazardous, non-hazardous, flammables...) will be disposed of by the Technical Team. To arrange uplift, send an email to building manager James Griffiths, naming the chemical, container integrity and any other information you consider relevant. And remember, the chemical must be stored appropriately while awaiting uplift. Old or broken equipment will be disposed of by the Technical Team. To arrange for disposal, send and email to James Griffiths. As a general rule, it is critically important that users unfamiliar with any aspect of waste disposal policies should consult with the Technical Team by emailing James Griffiths before committing any waste item to disposal. Basically, if in doubt – don’t guess – ask!
