Commemorative Plaque, 2021 Mary Pickford Lecture and Alison Douglas Prize

Friday 22nd October 2021 at 1.30pm

On Friday 22nd October three events hosted by CDBS/Deanery Of Biomedical Sciences are taking place.  Please mark your diaries and reply to this email if you want to attend “in person”.  The day’s schedule is as follows:

1:30 pm, Old Medical School Quad, Doorway 3.  Unveiling of a commemorative plaque, sponsored by The Physiological Society acknowledging the pioneering work of Prof Mary Pickford FRS FRSE.  Prof Moira Whyte, Head of CMVM, will unveil the plaque at the entrance of Doorway 3, Old Medical School Quad.  The President, Chief Executive and representatives of The Physiological Society will be present.  Please join us for this short event.

2:00 pm, Anatomy Lecture Theatre.  We will announce the winner of this year’s Alison Douglas Prize for the Best PhD dissertation for 2020/21.  We have a capacity of 50 attendees at this event and it would be great to see as many colleagues attend as they feel able.  Please email Laura.Thomas@ed.ac.uk to reserve a seat.  This event will also be “Zoom streamed” for those unable to attend.  The Annual Alison Douglas PhD Dissertation prize was established in 2015 following Alison’s untimely death and acknowledges her passionate and supportive mentorship of numerous postgraduate students.  Alison also played a central role in developing Athena Swan within Biomedical Sciences.

2:15 pm (approx.),  Anatomy Lecture Theatre.  Immediately following the announcement of the Alison Douglas Prize winner, Professor Dame Linda Partridge FRS, FRSE, from University College London, and Founding Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Ageing, will deliver the 2021 Mary Pickford Lecture entitled “Drugs for Healthier Ageing”.  Dame Linda will deliver the lecture remotely, but live, from Cologne via Zoom.  The lecture will last 45 mins with an opportunity for questions at the end.

Prof David Wyllie, Head of CDBS, will host these events “in person” in the Medical School Quad and then after in the Anatomy Lecture.  As indicated above, there are limited seats available for those who would like to attend - if you would like to reserve a seat, please email Laura.Thomas@ed.ac.uk ASAP.
