Edinburgh Neuroscientists help with first Scottish Brain Bee competition

Edinburgh Neuroscientists Dr Dorothy Tse and Dr Antonis Asiminas (both Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences) helped organise the first ever Scottish Brain Bee, which was held at the University of Edinburgh on 24 February.

The regional Brain Bee Competition, which took place on Saturday 24th of February at the University of Edinburgh, encourages participants to explore the diversity and depth of the mechanisms of the brain far beyond standard high school level and to gain experience beyond their classroom. For the first time, high school students from Lothian (Edinburgh) competed against each other on questions relating to the functionality of the brain.

The competition had two parts: a written exam (40 questions 45 min: Multiple choice & fill-in questions) and a histology & neuroanatomy exam (20 questions in 35 min).  It also provided student with the opportunity to be introduced to the vibrant research community and variety of centres that make up  Edinburgh Neuroscience, which is well-known for its integrated, cross-disciplinary and quality research.

Congratulations to the winners:

  • 1st: Anushka Irodi (St George's School)
  • 2nd: Olivia O'Neill (George Heriot's)
  • 3rd: Rosie Sinden (Castle Douglas High School)

We delight in sharing our passion for neuroscience with motivated young people, their parents and interested teachers.  This is an amazing opportunity to promote the next generation of scientists.

The prestigious competition has further rounds; in the near future the National Competition for which the first 3-5 winners from each regional hubs (from all over the UK) are invited, followed by the anticipated International Brain Bee Competition in July 2018, Berlin.
