My work focuses on the role of Pax6 in the adult cornea. [scald=6671:sdl_editor_representation {"caption":""}] Research Low levels of Pax6 expression in Pax6+/- mice and patients with aniridia cause abnormal eye development and progressive corneal deterioration after birth. We hypothesise that Pax6 has multiple roles in adult corneal homeostasis. Some aspects of adult corneal deterioration may be predetermined by abnormal development while other may reflect low levels of Pax6 in the adult. We are investigating this by manipulating Pax6 levels to a) determine how reduced Pax6 levels cause corneal abnormalities and b) to identify the role of Pax6 in corneal maintenance in the adult.
